Reflection based on the story “Sinigang”by Marie Aubrey J. Villaceran
‘Family’, a single word, with many different meanings. It could be your friends, pets and those who you are with at home. Family is where love, happiness and trust starts. They make you laugh and strong on times you think you’re alone. However, problems and conflicts always happen in our family: wheather it’s financial conflicts, lack of support to each other, unevitable mistakes or misunderstandings between the family members. All of this can definitely hurt us. But what if the the person who taught you how to forgive and your most trusted person in your family also happens to be the one who is going to ruin the strong relationship? And what if the person you love the most hurts you the most?
One of the common reasons why the family’s strong bond breaks are mistakes that cannot be undone. For instance, extramarital affairs. In the story “Sinigang” by Marie Aubrey J. Villaceran, which tells how Liza handled her situation when she knew that she has a half-brother,Lem and his beloved father put a crack on their family. When she was sent in the funeral of his stepbrother although she didn’t want to, she met Lem’s mom, Sylvia. Sylvia and her father eventually ask for her forgiveness, and as a respect she kept quiet so they wouldn’t make a scene and steal people’s attention. She handled all the situation well and tryied to forgive his father.
Extramarital affairs are relationship between a married person and someone aside from his or her spouse. Extramarital affairs have been exist as long as the marriage institution has been around. Cheating spouse has been a phenomenon for thousands of years. Sometimes, a person is not contented thus resorts him/her to look for the ‘happiness’ on other person. And as a result, because of their ‘selfishness’, they will eventually break and left their family. This certainly is so much hurtful mistake and cannot be easily forgotten and forgiven. Nonetheless, the aforementioned story shows a great moral values despite our hard reality. We all make mistakes, we commit unlawful deeds and repent at the end, when everything was gone. We all feel pain and at the same point we inflict it to the others. Some are willing to forgive their love ones how big or small mistakes they made. There are no such thing as perfect as human being; we all commit mistakes so we should learn how to forgive. In order to forgive others, we must learn to forgive ourselves first. We must love ourselves first.
